31 October 2012 - American rap star Nelly was detained near the Mexican border, in the very same border checkpoint that is surely becoming infamous in the world of pot-smoking celebs touring the US: in the town of Sierra Blanca, Texas.
Nelly is in the pleasant company of none other than Willie Nelson, Fiona Apple and, international pot-bust champion, Snoop Dogg, who have all fallen victim to the checkpoint, which lies happily on Route 66, a popular passage for touring artists.
However, if anyone's counting, the cops who busted Nelly's party win the prize for biggest bust, finding dozens of sachets of heroin, 4.5kg of marijuana, and a loaded .45 calibre pistol on the Grammy-winning rappers tour bus. They subsequently arrested one of his entourage, who had claimed responsibility for the drugs and weapons. In a statement Nelly, 37, said:
"It is my
understanding a member of my staff made an unfortunate decision to bring
unlawful materials onto our tour bus that resulted in his arrest. Neither I nor anyone else on the tour bus was aware of his decision to
bring these on board."
A spokesman for the Hudspeth County sheriff said Nelly's tour bus had pulled
into the Border Patrol checkpoint when a dog detected the presence of
controlled substances. Fellow passenger Brian Keith Jones admitted the drugs and weapon belonged to
him, he added.
