5 Oct 2010 - From a new biography with the previously untold story of John Le Mesurier, we learned that the British actor was an open and proud marijuana connoisseur.
Le Mesurier (1912-1983) was best known for is role as Sergeant Wilson in the popular 1970’s sitcom Dad’s Army. At the farewell celebrations to mark the screening of the last episode, Le Mesurier smoked what he described euphemistically as ‘extra strong cigarettes’.
‘It was a good evening,’ producer David Croft would confirm. Le Mesurier, while puffing out some powerful cannabis clouds, reminisced about the filming, said nice things about his colleagues and observed that ‘being in Dad’s Army was like belonging to a gentleman’s club’.
The biography states that the actor later concluded that the odd smoke of cannabis was not really ‘my bag’.
