24 August 2012 - Familiar with being a speaker of controversial opinion, King of smut Larry Flynt stated on his blog earlier this month:
"With polls showing that 50% of Americans favor the legalization of marijuana, why aren’t steps being taken to make that a reality? Blame those that have the most to lose from legal weed: the pharmaceutical, alcohol and prison industries. Pharmaceutical companies don’t want people turning to pot for pain relief because it would mean fewer customers buying prescription medications. Brewers and distillers don’t want the competition either. With mounting scientific evidence that pot is safer than alcohol, legal marijuana would clearly put a major dent in the booze business’s profits. Private, for-profit prisons only make money if they’re filled to capacity, and that means locking up weed growers and pot smokers."
Vocal and influential, Flynt is certainly a valuable ally in the fight for legalization in the States.
24 Feb 2011 - Larry Flint recently talk to 420 magazine about his views on marijuana. “Look. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realize that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol – if indeed it’s even harmful at all.” He notes that marijuana produces none of the darker side effects of alcohol – a drug that is legal.
He also reminds that before 1938, cannabis use was not illegal in the U.S. Only with the post-Prohibition rise of the big alcohol companies, and consequently the big alcohol lobby, was marijuana maligned; lied about; turned into a pariah – and declared illegal.
Referring to today’s Cannabis Prohibition, Flynt points out that, without a flourishing legal, regulated cannabis industry “… there are billions of dollars lost every year in cash revenue. And this ‘war on drugs’ has not worked – I don’t think it ever will. It’s just like Prohibition in the 20s didn’t work. I don’t think private control of drugs is going to work today.”
